The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the FY 2026 Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Competitive Program (Bus Program), which provides approximately $21 million in competitive funding to help public transit agencies modernize and expand their bus fleets and supporting infrastructure. The program supports capital projects to purchase, lease, replace, or rehabilitate buses regardless of propulsion type, as well as the construction, rehabilitation, and acquisition of bus-related facilities and equipment to enhance the safety, reliability, and accessibility of public transportation systems.

Eligible applicants include states, local government entities, federally recognized Tribal governments, and certain eligible subrecipients, with federal funding generally covering 80 percent of eligible project costs, and higher federal shares available for accessible and low- or zero-emission bus facilities. Applications are due September 21, 2026, and must be submitted through Grants.gov, with proposals evaluated based on demonstrated need, project benefits, planning and regional prioritization, local financial commitment, implementation strategy, and technical capacity.
