The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization (OBLR) has announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the FY 2027 Brownfields Job Training (JT) Grants Program, which provides competitive funding to support programs that recruit, train, and place local unemployed and underemployed residents into environmental careers. The program is designed to strengthen local workforces while supporting the assessment, cleanup, and revitalization of brownfield sites. EPA anticipates making up to 20 awards, with individual grants of up to $300,000 for project periods of up to three years. Eligible training may include brownfields assessment and remediation, hazardous materials handling, sustainable deconstruction, environmental health and safety, green infrastructure, GIS and site surveying, emergency preparedness, and other activities related to brownfield cleanup and redevelopment.

Eligible applicants include local and state governments, certain quasi-governmental and redevelopment entities, federally recognized Tribes and eligible Tribal organizations, Alaska Native corporations, qualified community development entities, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, workforce organizations, and public and nonprofit institutions of higher education, among other eligible entities. No local match is required, and voluntary committed cost share will not be accepted. Applications are due September 23, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET through Grants.gov. Proposals will be evaluated based on criteria including community need, the proposed training program, budget, program structure and anticipated outcomes, partnerships, leveraging, and programmatic capability.
